Here at Remedy Journey we’re in the CBD business: we track down CBD products, do weird CBD experiments, and dig into the science on CBD’s various applications. But for all our CBD experiences, we haven’t dabbled much in mixing CBD + THC — until now.
We’ve read that CBD works better in the presence of THC (and the other 100+ cannabinoids and terpenes present in hemp/marijuana). With Somatik Coffee we put this theory to the test, and came up with some interesting results.
Background: Who is Somatik?
Somatik is a San Francisco-based cannabis consumables company who partnered with another well-known SF-based company to make this cannabis-infused brew: Ritual Coffee.
San Francisco coffee enthusiasts know Ritual well as one of the more premium (or as we say here, “artisanal”) coffee brands in the city, so their involvement makes this doubly exciting for us.
The aim of this cannabis-infused coffee, according to Somatik’s founder Chris Schroder, is to provide a microdose of cannabis that’s more easily integrated into your day. An enhancer, something that smooths you out and helps you cultivate a positive mental space rather than getting you blitzed.
“Microdosing is really important because it helps new people have a positive first time experience, and it helps people use cannabis in their every day lives, normalizing cannabis use,” he said.
Does Somatik pull it off? Let’s get to the review.
Somatik 1:1 CBD-Infused Cold Brew Coffee Review
- 5 mg of THC (from a hybrid marijuana strain)
- 5 mg of CBD
- Organic coffee beans
Taste Score: 9/10
Does the drink taste bueno or no bueno?
The RJ crew has tried a number of CBD-infused cold brew coffees, and our consensus is: this is the best-tasting one. CBD coffees tend to have a bit of a weird weed-y aftertaste, but Somatik actually removed the terpenes from their cannabis oil to avoid this, and it worked!
Add to that Ritual’s always delicious coffee beans and you’ve got a winner tastewise: vibrant cherry undertones with no bitterness and no aftertaste.
Value Score: 6/10
How much CBD bang are you getting for your buck?
We’ve grown accustomed to extreme price points in the CBD-infused drink business, but at $9.50 for just a 4oz. bottle, this one takes the cake. That’s $2+ per oz!
Furthermore, 5mg of THC and 5mg of CBD is a fairly low dose for each: CBD doses are typically in the 15-25mg range, and THC in the 10-20mg range. That being said, as you’ll see a couple sections down, the CBD and THC interacted in such a way that the dose was more potent than we initially expected.
Health score: 8/10
How committed is this brand to health and wellness? We look at all the ingredients.
Ritual Coffee is known for their transparent sourcing and Somatik uses Ritual organic coffee beans, which is a plus.
However, the removal of terpenes means this isn’t a true full-spectrum cannabis oil, which dings their health score a little (since there is some evidence that the presence of other cannabinoids, including terpenes, may help enhance the therapeutic effects of CBD).
Relief Score: 9/10
Many of us consume CBD to relieve ailments. Does this product provide effective relief?
This was the area that this drink truly shined. We consume CBD primarily for anxiety, and found that this drink provided more effective anxiety relief than a much higher dose of CBD alone (for instance 20-25mg).
Despite the presence of THC the experience wasn’t psychoactive at all, but it was still different than the usual CBD-level relief.
Here’s the best way I can describe it: CBD is effective at removing anxiety, but THC + CBD (even at a microdose level) both removes anxiety and replaces it with a more positive, uplifting mental space. Again, not nearly enough to really get “high,” but enough that it made the experience more uplifting than CBD alone.
What makes this drink special? Does it promote productivity or focus? Does it get one “lit”?
This score goes along with the above relief score: the drink and the 1:1 CBD:THC ratio really made for an enjoyable experience. It was energizing, productivity-enhancing, AND mood enhancing. I drank it, got shit done, and felt great without a real buzz.
Final Verdict: 8.3/10
Let’s put it all together: what’s our overall take on this drink?
We like a lot about this drink: it uses organic ingredients, tastes great, and feels great. Our main sticking point is the obscene price point: 4oz is like 3 gulps, so we didn’t get to enjoy the taste all that much.
Still, as we said, the relief and experience this drink provided was comparable (if not superior) to a high-dose CBD drink, and those typically cost in the $8-10 range, so we don’t want to penalize them too much for the price when they’re more or less in line with other CBD drinks (but 4.oz?, c’mon).
